About Abacus Legal Group
Abacus Legal Group (ALG) was founded on 1 April 1992 by Dr. Akshoy Rekhi with a few like-minded foreign educated lawyers, at a time when India’s legal and economic landscape was undergoing a historic transformation. After spending five years in Boston, Dr. Rekhi returned to India in 1989 armed with a Master’s degree and a Doctorate from Harvard Law School. During his time in the United States, he gained valuable insight into the role that professionally managed law firms play in facilitating international business and investment. He recognised that as India integrated with the global economy, businesses would increasingly require sophisticated legal counsel capable of bridging international standards with the Indian legal system.
The economic liberalisation of 1991 marked a defining moment in India’s growth story. As regulatory reforms opened the country to foreign investments and global commerce, the need for a modern, business-focused legal practice became increasingly evident. Keeping this change that India was undergoing, Abacus Legal Group was established. From its inception, the firm distinguished itself through its combination of young, dynamic and internationally trained lawyers committed to delivering practical, commercially focused legal solutions to both Indian and international clients. Over the past three and a half decades, Abacus Legal Group has grown into a trusted legal adviser for multinational corporations, foreign investors, entrepreneurs and Indian businesses. While the legal and commercial landscape has evolved significantly, the firm’s founding philosophy remains unchanged—to provide high-quality legal advice built on professionalism, integrity, commercial insight and a deep understanding of clients’ business objectives. The multinational client’s whom ALG established in the last century have become big conglomerates in India and some of them are common household names in the business of white goods, software and insurance sectors. Today, ALG continues to build on the same vision that it was founded on, that is, assisting clients in navigating the opportunities and challenges of doing business and flourishing in India and across borders.
